Events Ward Museum- Come for an Hour or Stay for the Day With the price of gas soaring, many families on The Delmarva Peninsula are searching for a vacation closer to home.The Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art, SalisburyUniversity, offers a one-stop vacation. Enjoy waterfront relaxation, fish off the pier, paddle on the pond, observe or sketch the scenery, eat a picnic lunch under the pavilion and browse the air-conditioned galleries, theatre and gift shop.Whether coming for an hour or staying for the day, local residents may experience art and nature at the WardMuseum. The WardMuseum was selected as one of the “Best of the Road” by the Rand McNally Road Atlas for 2007.With visitors traveling from across the country and around the world, this destination is known to many who share a love of art, nature and the environment.The museum’s seven galleries and gift shop are complemented by a nature trail, fishing pier, observation deck and tranquil waterfront setting.Plan ahead and take advantage of the museum’s educational programs. Programs Nature Tales for Tots The Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art, SalisburyUniversity, hosts the free reading program “Nature Tales for Tots” from 10 - 11 a.m. every first and third Wednesday of the month in the WardMuseum lobby. This program is designed for children of the preschool to first-grade age. Early learners hear lively stories pertaining to the environment. Following the reading, a fun craft activity is conducted. Rain Gardens and Rain Barrels The Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art, Salisbury University, hosts a workshop on rain barrels and rain garden essentials from noon-4 p.m. Friday, September 5 or 10 a.m.-2 p.m. with break for lunch Saturday, September 6. Same program both days, register for only one date. Designed with the needs of home and business owners, contractors, landscaping professionals, educators and the public in mind, class is taught by professionals from Environmental Concern. Cost for barrel and garden class is is $30 for museum members, $40 for non-members. All materials are provided. Watershed management is the first defense for homeowners, landscapers and builders. Help protect against floods, provide groundwater recharging sites and reduce contamination of water sources including the Chesapeake Bay. Learn basic concepts of rain garden construction, uses and design. Build a rain barrel to sustain plants during drought and conserve water year-round. This event is sponsored by Value Carpet One and the Eastern Shore Chapter of the Association of Builders and Contractors (ABC). Registration deadline is Friday, August 29. Adult Carving Class The Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art, Salisbury University, hosts Carving 101 with Noel Justice Saturday, September 20, from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Learn to carve a small wooden decoy at the Ward Museum. All materials and tools are provided. Cost is $60 for members, $75 for non-members and $40 for youth. THE CHESAPEAKE WILDFOWL EXPO Friday-Saturday, October 10-11 Chesapeake Challenge head carving contest 1:30–3:30 P.M. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 11. Participants have two hours to complete a Mallard hen duck head. Registration fee is $10 per person. Prizes are awarded by Knotts Knives.
